1. Get a TV that matches the size of your room. There is no point buying a 50 inch LCD screen for a small studio apartment. The screen will be too big and you will hurt your eyes watching this large TV. Unless you have a large TV room or bed room, get a TV in the 30-40 inch range.

2. Get a HD receiver for your cable. Nowadays, almost every channel is in high definition and you are missing out if you are still in SD quality.3. Get a HD receiver that records. This way you can record all programs you cannot watch and watch them later on. You can set it so easily and it records as much as you want on a weekly basis.4. Get good speakers or a sound system. Sometimes the TV speakers are poor and do not have great quality. Get a surround sound system and you will turn your TV into a home theater system.

5. Calibrate the TV. Make sure the color, contrast and brightness are the way you want them. Having a softer setting often helps the eyes.

6. Do not watch with the lights off. You will be able to watch for longer with lights on and your eyes will hurt much less. It may seem fun to watch a movie in the dark, a la cinema style, but you do not want to do damage to your eyes.

7. Mount the TV on your wall. Doing this raises the screen height and gives you much better viewing angles for the entire room.

8. Get a BluRay player. This will allow you to buy BluRay discs, that are a higher quality than DVDs and you will have a better movie watching experience this way.

9. Get a TV from a well known company. Cheaper TVs from unknown companies have the same specs but are not as good quality wise, so it results in a poorer picture. A Samsung 720p 120Hz TV will be of a higher quality than a Dynex 720p 120Hz TV. That is just a fact.

10. Get a TV that has a high refresh rate. This will effect how action scenes and sports games appear. There will be no blur and a much smoother picture. This way you can enjoy the next NFL or baseball game and catch every bit of the action in crystal clear HD.

The one activity that you can be sure all members of the family will do, including pets, is to watch TV. Since you have a captive audience to work with, you can maximize your families TV time by trying any one of these seven secondary activities to watching TV.

Share Your Thoughts

Don’t insist on totally mute time while watching television as a family. Of course, one family member might insist on total quiet, but that is really not healthy. Allow family members to express emotions at what they are watching. If they get carried away, tell them politely to stop. Do not leave the room if the family member insists on acting up. Ask them what it is that they are watching that is making them act out.

Set Up A Family Viewing Schedule

Each family member could have a favorite show that they insist on watching. Let them post it and the time and station on the refrigerator door. Each family member can have one must see show. As parent or guardian, you can post the times when certain shows are being aired. Family members can choose to watch the program or not. In families with more than one television that might not be such an important protocol to keeping everyone happy.

Watch The News Together

The news is very important. All family members should be aware of what is going on in their community and in the world. Ask that your family join you in watching the news. If you have children, give them a challenge that will make watching the news desirable. Let them try to remember the major news stories and repeat them when the news is done. Don’t berate anyone who doesn’t remember as well as the other. After a week of watching the news and reporting afterwards, take the family out to dinner.

Keep The TV Room Tidy

Everyone watches the TV. Everyone should share in the clean up. Assign each family member a task in the TV room. All tasks should be done before everyone sits to watch TV.

Hold Onto The Remote Control

If you have a large family, you had best hold on to the remote control. There might be some disagreement but to plan to avoid disputes is better than trying to put one down.

Plan To Watch Non-family Shows When Children Are In Bed

You are not really going to close your children’s ears if you watch TV shows that use sexually explicit language. Even if you put your children into their room while you are watch that type of entertainment, you run the risk of your children hearing and possibly repeating the language that they hear. Keep the volume down if it is your children’s bedtime since little ears have a keen reception.

Discuss Violence On TV With Your Kids

You might want to censor some of the shows that you watch as a family. A child might watch a violent cartoon and not accept it as proper behavior. But, if you watch that cartoon with him as an adult, he might assume that you see that type of behavior in cartoon characters as acceptable behavior even for him. Some children have an unspoken understanding that if their parents are seeing something really bad which is what violence means to most children, and don’t stop it, that it must be all right.

DVR has revolutionized the way we watch television. Using a DVR is as simple as pushing the record button on your remote, and watching it at your convenience. When you record a show or television program, you can skip any part or pretty much do anything you would like. You can skip commercials, make your own slow motion replays, re-watch a part of something you missed, the possibilities are endless. The following are the top 5 ways to use your DVR to it’s full potential.

Working Your DVR Takes Some Practice, But You’ll Be Rockin’ It In No Time

1. Set a timer- You can always set a timer ahead of time by finding the show you want to watch, and pressing the record button on your remote. If you are not going to be at home when the show you want to watch airs, you can record it and save it for later. Plus, the upside to this is that you can skip all the commercials! It comes in really handy.2. Add storage space – Some DVR receivers might have the option to add more storage space which could come in really handy if you watch a lot of television. Usually on DVR’s, you can record an upwards of 100 hours of television shows. Adding more storage could give you the option to double or even triple the amount of tv you can record.

3. Recording multiple shows at once – Most, if not all DVR’s have the option to record 2 or more shows at the same time, which could come in really handy, especially if multiple shows you want to watch are on at the same time. The only downside to doing this is that you can’t record multiple shows and watch live tv at the same time.

4. Organization – If your DVR has a lot of shows on it, chances are it’s pretty unorganized. There are options you can mess with to add folders so that all of the same show can be sorted by the name, by season, month, etc. This is one thing that is a must for tv show recording maniacs.

5. Exporting tv shows to your computer – If you buy special hardware that can be added to your computer, you can actually sync your DVR to your computer and take your shows on the go! You could even burn them to a DVD and save them forever instead of deleting shows you love when you run out of space on your DVR receiver.

These are the many things you can do to maximize the usage of your DVR.
